Made with a paper-mache box, a copy of a heritage photo, vintage buttons, scraps of CottageArts.net's’ papers, and Mod-Podge®, this project evokes pleasant memories, laughter, and an occasional nostalgic tear! Note: Papers printed on Epson printer with Epson Double-Sided Matte Paper, which works well with decoupage (ink doesn't run).

Hope in the Memories (Part 2) - Memories, Reminisce, “Remember when……” are all words that give our hearts a “warm fuzzy”. When a child of eight reminisces with his ten year-old brother, beginning with the statement “remember when we were little?” it brings a smile to our face. We know that they have only begun storing up the memories of a lifetime! When a mother of 40 tearfully says goodbye to her 18 year-old at the college dorm, she comforts herself with the childhood memories of her “baby”. When a grandmother of 80 sees her granddaughter walk down the aisle, she fondly remembers her own weeding so many years ago. Reminiscing is fun, healing, and poignant.

As the Resident Services Director of Horizon Health’s Assisted Living Facilities (the Harmony Houses), I am responsible for coordinating our Activity Program. Since most of our residents are over the age of 70 and have memory loss, reminiscing is my best tool! Most memory loss diseases rob people of their short-term memory. As the disease progresses, the person’s reality becomes farther and farther in the past. Many no longer yearn to go home to their spouse, but home to their parents. They live in their childhood, and thinking about their “lost” parents could be very traumatic! Reminiscing about their past, helping them to remember which high school they attended, their courtship, their wedding day, can slowly bring them back to adulthood, and may lessen that yearning for their lost childhood.

At Harmony House we have always used reminiscing as a form of therapy. With CottageArts’ donation we will have the funds to begin creating memory books and memory boxes with our residents. The staff and residents are so very grateful!! I hope to keep you all informed of our progress through this newsletter, and hopefully you will also be able to use some of our ideas.

Included in this issue is a photo of our prototype memory box. Made with a paper-mache box, a copy of a heritage photo, vintage buttons, scraps of Cottage Arts’ papers, and Mod-Podge®, this project evokes pleasant memories, laughter, and an occasional nostalgic tear! It also becomes a wonderful birthday gift for our residents’ children or grandchildren. It is a project that with staff assistance, all of our residents can complete with a feeling of accomplishment.

Kitti Solinger, Resident Services Director, Harmony House

Thena's Thoughts

Reflections

I have such reflections of the past
As I picture my mother's face
And the tenderest of loving feelings
Felt in her warm embrace...

Reflections in the mirror?
Yes, I see her there
In the lines upon my forehead
And the graying in my hair.

I see her in the hand
Outstretched in front of me
Is that my hand I look at now
Or my mother's hand I see?

I hear my voice echo
Words I heard her say
And her phases become more prominent
I seem to use them every day.

I don't really mind it
That I look a bit like she did
For she was my hero
From the time I was a kid.

And I heard her once in passing
A similar story share
That when she looked into her mirror....
She saw HER mother there....

Thena's Journaling Tips ************************************************************************

Having always been a verbose person, the most difficult part of journaling for me is to make sure that I have spelled the word correctly! I am so thankful for PC journaling with spell check, which enables me to type away at highest speed without fear of misspelling. My thoughts tend to flow rapidly from my heart and sometimes exceed the speed with which my fingers can get them to paper. In other words: I think faster than I type!
