Holiday Photo Tips

I was thrilled to be asked to share my holiday photography and tips with
Creating Keepsakes™ for their Scrapbooking Christmas Memories special issue a few years ago, and thought I'd re-cap my tips again for this issue's newsletter.

Bring your camera to all your loved ones' recitals, concerts, or performances. Don't use your flash; it is distracting and won't help. If you are able, set the camera speed for low light, and take some test shots before the performance begins.

Also, remember the rule of thirds...don't center the focal point, but offset it so your eye goes around the image instead of stopping in the middle.

Most importantly, catch the unexpected. Here, my cousin's adorable little guy got caught snitching a bite of a cookie and putting it back at our annual family Christmas party.

Showcase your little one's first Christmas by taking as many photos of them as possible.

Use natural lighting whenever you can.

Be creative with special effects, such as AutoFX Mystical Lighting's fairy dust...

Capture shots of your favorite traditions, such as tree-trimming, clearing the ice rink, or playing games. These are the memories that your family will cherish.

Hand the camera over to someone else to make sure you are in a few shots this season!

Play with photo tinting for fun effects. Here is a past tutorial (bottom of article)...

Get all the cousins together with Grandma and Grandpa. :)  Don't be afraid to pose some shots. It's ok if they aren't all looking at the camera, as it's fun seeing their personalities on film.
