When
and why did you start digital scrapbooking?
I
started digital scrapbooking in June of 2003. I wanted to
be able to share with my children what their lives were like as
kids. I didn't want them to have to wonder "How old am I in this
picture?" or "What was I doing?!"
Is
there anything in your background that helped you?
Honestly, no. I was the anti-art kid
growing up. I hated coloring!! It was all about music for me. I
left the art to my older brother and younger sister, both very
talented sketch artists.
Do
you use tutorials or do you just go by instinct?
Most of what I know about Paint Shop
I learned through tutorials. I tend to go on instinct when it
comes to my layouts though. If it feels right, I try it. If it
looks right, I keep it.
What's
the most meaningful layout you've ever created?
That's a tough question. If I
have to pick just one, it would be one called "Always" that I
created for JP. He lives with his father, so I don't see him as
much as I'd like, and this layout just sends the simple message
"Always know that you are loved" to him. He has a copy of it
hanging on his bedroom wall.
What
do you most hope to share with others through your scrapbooking?
For my children, I'd really like
them to have a sense of their history. Not just the big events,
but the everyday ups and downs. For others, it's a creative way
for me to share my family photos with them.
Where
do you get inspiration?
It varies. Sometimes it's the photo,
sometimes it's the kit or a quote I've seen somewhere.
What
is your favorite aspect of scrapbooking?
Right now, I'd have to say the
photography aspect. I love photography, and scrapping gives me
reasons galore to whip out the camera at any time.
Do
you prefer to do single layouts or groups (albums)?
Single layouts most of the
time. I do place them in albums as gifts for the grandparents,
though!
First
the picture or the layout?
It's about 60/40 right now,
with the picture coming first. There are times when I get a
layout idea, or if I'm working from a sketch when I'll do the
placement first, then add the picture.
Do
you take film or digital photos or both?
Most of my photos are digital;
it's so much easier for me.
What
is your favorite photography tip?
Turn off the flash, get in
close, and don't be afraid to use a lot of film/memory.
What
do you most want to improve about your photography?
I have trouble with manual
focus, so I've been working on that a lot lately.
Do
you print your layouts?
What size? What printer (if applicable)?
For gifts and photo swaps,
absolutely. For my own personal use I save them to CDs. When I
print at home it's either 8½
x11 or 8x8. I use a Canon S900, love it!
Do
your kids scrap too?
Not yet, they're only 2 and 5
years old. I'll definitely show them the ropes one day though!
How
long does it take you to make a layout?
It varies. Sometimes it takes
me 30 minutes. I've had layouts that have taken me days, as well.
How
does your family feel about your digital scrapbooking?
My husband loves it. I'm always
asking for his input, and on occasion his words. My older son
thinks it's "way super awesome cool Mommy!" He likes to see
pictures of himself while I'm working. And one of my husband's
aunts checks out my gallery at CottageArts.net at least once a
week to see if there's anything new. I guess you could say that
my family loves that I scrap!
